The Global Game Jam: 48 hours of intense creation at HELHa

Creating a game in just 48 hours? More than 250 participants rose to the challenge during the Global Game Jam held at HELHa Mons from January 24 to 26. Among them, around 130 developers, artists, and creators took part in the event firsthand, spending two nights on site to bring their ideas to life.

Both creative and challenging!

The Global Game Jam (GGJ), the world’s largest game creation event, gathers more than 25,000 enthusiasts in over 100 countries every year. Much like a hackathon, the event challenges participants to design a game based on a theme revealed at the very last moment.

“The Game Jam is a way to put your knowledge into practice, learn lots of new things… and also have fun with friends!”

A timed event

The Global Game Jam generally unfolds as follows:

  • Everyone gathers on Friday late afternoon to watch a short presentation video with advice from leading game developers;
  • A secret theme is then revealed;
  • Participants around the globe are challenged to create games based on that theme, with the deadline set for Sunday afternoon.

It’s a stimulating and rewarding experience that pushes participants’ skills and creativity to their limits. The event demonstrates that collaboration and imagination are key drivers of successful creation.

The event has been documented in a video, which also reveals the theme for the 2025 edition.
