Visa and Insurance

Visa

European students do not need a visa to study in Belgium. If you live outside EU, however, you will need a visa to study in Belgium. Please, visit the following website for all practical information.

Within 8 days of arrival, all international students are requested to present themselves at the municipal administration of the city of residence to register as a foreigner on Belgium soil.  Appointments are taken online.

To register as a foreigner, you will need:

  • 4 ID pictures
  • ID
  • Address in Belgium
  • Learning / Trainee agreement
  • Certificate of acceptance in HELHa
  • A copy of the grant certificate
  • The visa (for students outside EU)

Insurances

We recommend European students to obtain the European Health card from their health insurance. This is not valid for non-European citizens.

This card will enable incoming students to benefit from health services during their mobility according to the agreements between Belgium and their country.

It does not cover repatriation, continued medical treatments, non-urgent treatments …  So, make sure with your sending institution that you are insured for medical assistance and repatriation in case of need.  If not, you might need to take out a private personal insurance.

This private personal insurance is compulsory for obtaining the VISA for non-European students.
