On April 16, the HELHa–UCLouvain Mons campus transformed in a completely new way to host the very first edition of the Relais des Loupiotes.
With more than 410 participants gathered in a festive, musical, and sporting atmosphere, the event exceeded all expectations. In teams of three, runners took turns on a 1.1 km loop, racing against the clock but above all sharing a convivial moment together.
The idea for the Relais des Loupiotes came from the desire of Xavier Carliez, co-organiser and HELHa Sport coordinator, to move from being a participant to an organiser.
“After taking part in numerous running races and triathlons, I increasingly felt the urge to create my own sports project. As an athlete, I’ve gained a lot of experience by observing what works in the field,” he explained enthusiastically.
It was only natural for him to launch an event that was both sporting and charitable on the Mons site, bringing together the UCLouvain and HELHa communities. This first joint organisation fostered exchanges between the teams and departments of the two institutions, in a spirit of cooperation and energy.
“Given the layout of the site, it was a great opportunity to create a unifying moment between our two institutions,” added Xavier Carliez.
The funds raised during the evening will be donated to two local initiatives: ASBL Tous à bord, which promotes the inclusion of people with disabilities through adapted sports and leisure activities, and Home St Alfred, which supports people with intellectual disabilities in a warm and structured living environment.
Throughout the course, participants were spurred on by various animations. From cheerleaders from both institutions, to live music, and particularly determined supporters.
Accessible to all levels and focused on the joy of moving together, the relay attracted students, staff members, sports clubs, and partners alike.
Several local sports clubs were also in attendance, including Mons Running Team, La Hest Run, and RTT Hyon Cuesmes (table tennis, 4 teams). ASBL Tous à bord joined in with three teams, including two joëlettes, special wheelchairs that enabled participants with reduced mobility to fully experience the event and share the adventure with their team.
“Overall, I was delighted and very surprised by the scale of the event. I didn’t expect so many participants. Among colleagues, we try to motivate each other and sign up for various team sporting challenges.” — Virginie Bury
“A very positive impression, with top-notch organisation. The course was particularly varied: through buildings, on asphalt, dirt, with some uphill sections… Plus, refreshment stations all along the way, small gifts, all for a very affordable entry fee. It was fantastic!” — Corentin Rasneur
The evening continued with an acoustic concert by TheSoundBirds, creating a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere before the awards ceremony and raffle.
To close the event in style, the student house came alive with a rock concert.
The organisers extend a special thanks to the sponsors who supported this first edition of the Relais des Loupiotes. Their support was essential in delivering a high-quality event that was festive, inclusive, and charitable. Thanks to their contribution, participants enjoyed an evening full of emotions and surprises: Up_Mons, FORMYFIT, Distriboissons, Ville de Mons, ASBL MonSports, ACN TIMING, Delhaize, Lago Mons, and La Maison Des Vins Fins.
Buoyed by this success, a second edition is already being planned for next year. The organisers warmly thank all the participants, volunteers, and partners who helped make this evening an unforgettable moment.
