In 2026, workplace safety is more strategic than ever for companies.
Regulatory pressure and increasing client expectations are driving higher standards across industries.
To meet these challenges, HELHa prepares its students to be immediately operational by offering VCA certification as part of their studies.
What is VCA?
VCA stands for “VGM Checklist Aannemers” (VGM = Safety, Health and Environment in Dutch).
This certification has become essential in many industrial sectors, including:
- Chemicals, petrochemicals, food industry, and more
- Construction sites, electrical installations, welding, etc.
- Technical services (insulation, industrial cleaning, scaffolding, transport)
- Mechanical and electrical maintenance
These training courses are delivered by Le Forem or Technofutur and are free of charge for HELHa students.
Programmes that include VCA certification
Four professionally oriented Bachelor’s programmes within the Science, Technology and Life Sciences Department integrate the Operational VCA certification into their curriculum:
In Charleroi
- Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering (work-study programme)
The training is integrated into the first-year safety course (January). Passing this course is mandatory to access professional immersion. - Bachelor’s in Home Automation and Building Management
In Tournai
- Bachelor’s in Electromechanics
Mandatory since 2023 for all students completing an internship in a company.
In Mons
- Bachelor’s in Construction
The training is offered to students, who can complete it at a time that suits them.
Some programmes, such as Industrial IT, are currently considering integrating it.
What does the Operational VCA cover?
The Operational VCA certification covers essential topics such as:
- Construction site safety
- Permits
- Explosives and hazardous substances
- Safety regulations and legislation
The Operational Management VCA (higher level) leads to a recognised certification valid for 10 years.
The added value of VCA during studies
Obtaining VCA certification during studies is a major asset on a CV and significantly enhances employability.
It also represents a saving of time and money (around €600) for companies hiring HELHa graduates.
In addition, VCA contributes to:
- Reducing workplace accidents
- Improving risk management during internships
An added advantage: this certification is recognised in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France.
